ESTATE TAXES
A little advance planning can save a lot in estate taxes. The trick is to
get your taxable estate down as close as possible to $625,000-the amount it
takes to run up a tax bill equal to the 1998 uniform estate and gift tax
credit of $202,050 that's available to nearly everyone. (We say nearly
everyone because the benefit of this credit is phased out for estates
topping $10 million.) The size of an estate that can pass tax free increases
each year until it reaches $1,000,000 in 2006.
