Some thoughts on VOD AirTouch management...

Interesting that without much fanfare/press that the top three AirTouch management (Ginn, Sarin, Mohan G.,) have all moved on and also that Vodafone AirTouch will be dropping the "AirTouch" from its name later this month. Especially interesting that Ginn and Charles Schwab resigned from board without much of anything being said. Ginn had a nice deal as non-exec chairman and don't know why he would not want to be a key/lead part of building the VOD empire and only had to fly to UK a few times a year to do it. Obviously, all these guys have plenty of $$ but Mohan is choosing to go to lead ATE and Sarin at InfoSpace rather than accept a post at VOD.

My concern is that factored in with the issues around Mannesmann management-especially the disgruntled Esser-is that VOD is going to have to figure-out how to integrate the people into its acquisitions-not just the wireless assets. These are all talented managers and its a shame to see them leaving VOD b/c they could be an asset to helping them execute on their strategy rather than heading for the exits. Gent, Bamford, Hydon, Horn-Smith can't do it all by themselves. They've proven masters at the acquisitions-but to execute on the operational front pulling together the synergies needed I'm not so confident in. They need strong relationships with their partners where they don't have day-to-day managers in charge. Pulling it together with the "big fist" from the UK at the board level could prove tougher than they think. JMO

On a brighter note, glad to see the markets responding positively to the KPN news which validates that maybe VOD is not so "stupid" after all by paying big money for licenses and also could limit future competition for upcoming licenses.
