So it bothers me that in our culture people are offended by the sight or sound of another person praying in public.

I'm not offended by anyone praying in public, although I might sometimes be startled or feel awkward and perhaps appear to be offended. The only time I'm bothered by praying is when the majority performs a prayer in a way that unfairly forces it others who are within the group, like Christian prayers in a public school classroom. That's just rude, IMO. If I were having a party and invited people of different religions or nationalities or dietary practices, I wouldn't serve food or play music that would be offensive to any of them. IMO, this is more an issue of manners than of rights. I don't understand why some vociferous practitioners of the the US's majority religion don't get it. Members of minority religions certainly do.
