Doug, your research needs a bit more work.

Dave Cutler was one of the original programmers on VMS, DEC's famous OS. He was hired by Microsoft to lead the design of NT 4.0, DEC noticed that NT 4.0 looked very much like a project he had been working on at DEC. This was the basis of the DEC/MSFT suit, they settled out of court and MSFT ported NT to Alpha.
