Just to make sure-- I went to the earliest articles-
From Nov 26- one day after the rescue- this was written

Family members said they believe the boy's mother, whom they identified as Elizabeth Broton Rodriguez, 28, may have taken Elian without telling his father and grandfather, both of whom live in Cuba and shared custody of the child with the mother.

ANd from the next day-- and this is interesting in retrospect- already the conflict was shaping up-

Elian spoke with his father Friday night and told him about his cousins, new clothes and toys. Marisleysis Gonzalez, the father's cousin, said they would try to reach him again Saturday night. They were worried that Elian's father, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, might want his son returned to Cuba.

''His mother lost her life for him to be here,'' Gonzalez said outside her home. ''He needs his freedom and we're his family -- he should be with us.''

Seems they were already discounting dad.
