But what is the control? How your actions affect others? Some people have internal guides that impel them to hurt others- I think I prefer a more general external guide that is commonly agreed on, which has more chance of weeding out the actions of people whose internal guides are WAY out of whack with what I should wish them to be.

People who want to go above and beyond can still do so- but it's nice to have society set down some sort of arbitrary baseline which we may expect people to adhere to.
