While many investors remain focused on Washington, D.C., for the next clue as to Microsoft's future, looking closer to home might be the smartest move right now.
Try checking out what some analysts are calling sluggish early sales of the giant's much-touted Windows 2000 operating system. Windows 2000 is the latest version of the powerful operating system that was so dominant it got the software pioneer in antitrust trouble. But there are signs that early sales volume is underwhelming.
"The company seems below what our numbers were," says Rick Sherlund, who follows Microsoft for Goldman Sachs Group.
