I believe most players would consider an optical switch and its intelligent software more of a system than a component.

Is that what Agilent is selling? I thought their silica waveguides and IC actuators were the building blocks of the switches and could be cascaded and scaled however the system vendor wanted. I didn't think they sold the whole "switching system" including software and the like. Perhaps I haven't quite understood where it fits?

Maybe the Agilent switch isn't a component or a system and fits somewhere in between, kind of where the Avanex Powermux fits. The Powermux can be sold to carriers, systems vendors, or component makers. Perhaps the same is true of the Agilent switch (although I doubt it would be sold to carriers).
