Rambus Develops 3.125-Gbit/s Serial
Interface

Rambus Inc has developed the SerDes serial interface with a peak data
transfer rate of 3.125 Gbits/s. Unlike existing Rambus interfaces for dynamic
random access memory (DRAM), the new device is designed to interconnect
the printed circuit boards mounted in networking and related equipment.

Connection is point-to-point, and no specifications have been defined for the
logical layer protocol format or physical connectors. The firm recommends
selecting a connector from among those currently available.

The driver circuit converts an 8-bit wide parallel data stream into a 1-bit serial
stream, using 8B/10B encoding. As a result, the peak data transfer rate is 2.5
Gbits/s. Two signal lines are used per channel for data transfer, in a differential
scheme. The supply is +1.8V or +2.5V, and the signal amplitude is 0.5V on
the driver side and 0.25V on the receiver side. Maximum signal path length
between driver and receiver is about 30 inches. Rambus will license a
macrocell needed to design integrated circuits (IC) for the interface, each
consisting of a 4-channel SerDes interface circuit. The macrocell has the same
chip footprint as DirectRambus when using a 0.18-micron rule, about 3 to
4mm2. The firm also plans to supply macrocells with higher channel counts.
