The obvious conclusion is that the teaching or sponsorship of religion is simply not an
appropriate activity for the state.

I would modify that to the teaching or sponsorship of particular religions.

This distinction is important to me. For example, I certainly object to the prayers of any particular religion being taught as part of the school curriculum. But I have no objection at all to a period of time during which students may optionally pray or meditate or otherwise engage in such spiritual exercise (or lack thereof) as they choose.

As we become more and more aware of the holistic nature of human life and experience, more and more we are coming to understand that the spiritual is an important aspect of the human condition. There are repeated sociological (scientific!) experiments which show that people with a strong spiritual base tend to lead healthier lives, both physically and emotionally, than those without such a base. (I'm not going to get into the ups and downs of that research. And there are certainly exceptions, as there are in all sociological exeriments. However, I accept that it is a generally accepted result of scientific research in the field, and let it go at that.) The point is that when we actively eradicate the spiritual dimension of the human experience from the schools, we take out an important aspect of the healthy holistic person. We don't starve the mind or the body at school -- it defeats me why we see it as so important that we starve the spirit.
