European summer may spur metals rally-UBS
Warburg

LONDON, July 7 (Reuters) - Several supportive factors for base metals may enable
prices to rise in coming months, but the key issue may be the European summer, UBS
Warburg/Metallgesellschaft said in its latest weekly report.

The usual summer slowdown in Europe may be smaller than normal this year, as both producers and consumers in the
European base metal sector report healthy order books. This suggests strong underlying metal demand.

``Further recovery in the euro against the U.S. dollar could also help European metal demand,'' it said.

Other props for metal prices in coming months are strong domestic demand growth in China and Russia, high energy
prices which affect the supply-side, and continuing declines in metal inventories.

The high impact of U.S. energy prices on aluminium has attracted most attention, but it is not restricted to this industry
alone. Copper major Phelps Dodge (NYSE:PD - news) issued a second quarter profits warning, citing higher energy
costs, the report noted.
