Altavista was leaps and bounds ahead of everyone back in '96, yet they didn't get the IPO off. Now I don't think there is anything unique about them. If they were profitable, then I would think their growing audience would mean something. But who even cares if they are better than Excite or Lycos? Anyways, I've been wrong before, so maybe I'm wrong again. But Google.com is looking good, and now they are the main search engine of Yahoo!, replacing Inktomi, which replaced AltaVista. Altavista has gone from the leading search engine to a loose collection of unprofitable web sites.
