One reason I wanted to switch to individual stocks is that the broad market (NYSE) which is what I've always traded isn't going anywhere -- yet the economy is moving ahead, and the stocks of the companies behind that move should do well as the economy grows, even if the broad market index goes nowhere.

The NYSE isn't positive today -- only the NASDAQ is.

Speaking of companies, I know a lot about BEA Systems (BEAS) now. They would seem to be right at the center of a major growth area as companies bring their legacy applications into the internet age.
