Well, I would guess that it was either the Welland Canal which cuts across the little corner of Ontario against New York near Niagara Falls...

Or... It could be one of the mechanical locks in the Trent-Severn canal system... which makes its way through quite an elevation too...

I don't know much about the Welland Canal though... My Dad had some photos of one of the locks in the Trent-Severn system. I haven't seen it in years, but it was quite a thing as I recall. Will do a bit of research and report back to you... (-:

BTW, I just love things like canals and locks. A lot of them were built many years ago and are still in service today.... like the ones on the Rideau System....the basic "workings" are the same as they've been for a century or two.. pretty astounding...
