SUNW is my favorite Linux play <g> --- I'm one of those people who don't really think desktop GUI Linux is any kinda holy grail. The architecture of Windows lends itself well to an end user desktop (especially one with a reset switch). The architcture of Unix is born from an entirely different design philosophy. --- I run Linux/Unix. Lately though, I prefer running it through a DOS terminal {commo} and do everything on the ISP server (no graphics but WAY faster). --- Coming from a DOS BBS background, Linux to me is like the holy grail of PC experience. --- Having said that, there are massive steps being made by KDE and Gnome and now another GUI frontend by some guys from Apple which bring the Windows type GUI Linux alternative QUITE close to being competitive on the desktop. It's my opinion that the 'comminity' isn;t far from being competitive; perhaps only missing Quicken and a more stable Java browser. --- I think though that by the time this 'good front-end' is happening, PCs will be wound down. Today, schools in Mexico have replaced Windows PC with Linux/Gnome and that's really working out for them. I'm just not a big PC fan no matter what the OS though. ----MS certainly doesn't have a leg to stand on accusing anyone of stealing their interface. ---Rudedog here on the thread can probably better tell you about the goings on at CPQ. Partly, I think DEC was just too much for them to swallow. They've got 3 Unices there (plus VMS) on top of having bought into the NT easter bunny like so many others. --- In that time, Sun stepped in and walked away as the winner of the Unix wars. Solaris is by far the King of the Unix hill with a far greater degree of *nix mindshare than it's rivals. -JCJ
