An edifying post, nihil. Thanks for that. The direct taxation provisions of the constitution require direct taxes to be allocated among the states in proportion to population? So the income tax is unconstitutional. Or was, until the 16th amendment usurped the authority. I see why it took almost 20 years to get it through. I wonder why the desire to replace the tariff (an external tax) with an internal tax was so strong. It certainly doesn't seem to have been in the best interest of the American people.
