Rational Software Demonstrates Integration of Rational Suite With Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
First Public Demonstration of Enterprise Application Development Solution Integrated With Visual Studio.NET
ORLANDO, Fla., July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft PDC 2000 -- Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL - news), the e-development company, announced that together with Microsoft Corp. they will be demonstrating the integration of Rational Suite with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET during the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference today in Orlando, FL. This will be the first public demonstration of an enterprise application development solution integrated with Visual Studio .NET. This demonstration will be presented in session #5-329 today at the conference.

This integration initiative by Rational and Microsoft is the result of the companies' collaboration to help software developers build Internet applications faster and with higher quality. The integration of Rational Suite with Visual Studio .NET will provide the first and most comprehensive lifecycle enterprise solution for application development on the Microsoft .NET Platform. This enhances the existing integrations with Rational Suite, Visual Studio 6 and the Microsoft Windows DNA platform. Rational Software is a gold sponsor of the conference and has been exhibiting their current products in booth #506.

``As a member of the Visual Studio Integration Program, Rational is delivering a great win for our customers as it allows them to prepare for Visual Studio .NET by building their applications right today with Rational's set of leading lifecycle tools,'' said Chris Atkinson, vice president Developer solutions group, Microsoft. ``The combination of Microsoft's new .NET Platform and Rational's e-development solutions translates into success for companies building Internet software.''

The integration of Rational Suite with Visual Studio .NET and the Microsoft .NET Platform will provide software developers a consistent user experience that combines the new power of the Visual Studio .NET environment with the e-development capabilities of Rational Suite. The integrated solution combines all the benefits of the Rational solution that exist today with the re-use of the Visual Studio .NET infrastructure, including an intuitive user interface and browser and task lists.

``The combined efforts by Rational and Microsoft to provide a version of Rational Suite that integrates into Visual Studio .NET significantly reduces the time required to build software for the Internet, while also increasing the software's quality,'' said Eric Schurr, senior vice president of Marketing and Suite Products for Rational Software. ``We are extremely excited to be able to preview this integrated solution for the thousands of Microsoft users attending the Microsoft PDC.''

The demonstration at the PDC is yet another deliverable from the multi-year strategic relationship between Rational and Microsoft. In addition to the integration of Rational Suite with Visual Studio.NET, the following are highlights of the strategic relationship:

-- Rational provides Microsoft with the modeling technology that ships in
every copy of Visual Studio Enterprise. Rational and Microsoft have
been co-developing Microsoft Visual Modeler (MSVM), a subset of
Rational Rose technology, since 1996. The third version of MSVM is the
modeling product contained in Visual Studio 6.0.

-- Microsoft makes broad use of Rational's products internally from
modeling to configuration management and testing, including Microsoft's
use of Rational Suite PerformanceStudio for multiple Web-based load
testing initiatives. In fact, Microsoft is the largest user of
Rational's performance testing software in the world.

-- Rational and Microsoft recently completed a 26-city seminar tour with
over 1,700 attendees looking to use Rational's e-development solution
with Microsoft technologies.

-- Rational, Microsoft, and Lionbridge jointly developed the Windows 2000
TestFoundation, a specification, methodology, set of utilities, and
predefined test scripts to reduce the time required for customers to
validate their software on Windows 2000.

-- Rational is a founding member of the Microsoft Visual Studio
Integration Program.

-- In a press release issued today, Microsoft has chosen Rational's
e-development solution for its Business Internet Solutions Center, a
first-of-its-kind facility providing companies access to the Microsoft
people, partners, tools and information they need to develop scalable
and reliable eBusiness solutions.

-- Rational is committed to back Microsoft's newly announced .NET
Framework by ensuring that Rational tools support developers eager to
embrace the .NET Framework.

-- Rational has collaborated with Microsoft and Applied Information
Sciences, Inc. to add specific Windows DNA content to the Rational
Unified Process (RUP). These enhancements will provide detailed
technical guidance to organizations using RUP to develop business
Internet applications on Microsoft Windows DNA platform.
