Paul,

"Compaq sell a bunch of 'em?"

Well let's see... Compaq will be selling their
Itanium offering with Linux or Win64. Since
Win64 won't be production ready until McKinley, that
leaves them Linux. A very pricey Itanium offering
compared to the 4 or 8 way IA32 servers they ship coupled
with unknowns, one would be happy if they did 20% of the
IA32 numbers... so maybe 7000 in the first year. Maybe.

That isn't a bunch by any measurement.

So this time next year (July 2001) we look at how
Itanium is doing and listen to Intel marketdroids tell
us about how it is just getting started, blah blah and
look for more better McKinley. Interestingly, by 1Q or so
2001 Foster is here and makes Itanium look rough at
business (I/O) benchmarks so Itanium finds its superior
number crunching niche which Linley Gwennap has been
steering us to for a few years now himself.

Yeah, Linux Itanium number crunchers. Big market for
that I suppose.
