Sales of chip equipment and materials could rise by 35 percent this year, as demand for cell
phones and other electronic devices spurs growth, an industry group said.

Chip equipment and materials manufacturers could see worldwide sales rise to US$34.5 billion
this year, from US$25.5 billion last year, said Stanley Myers, president and chief executive of
Semiconductor Equipment and Materials, a trade group.

Sales could reach US$43 billion by 2001 and US$48 billion by 2003, Myers said.

Increasing sales of chips and semiconductor equipment could continue for the next several years.
Fueling that growth is demand for wireless telephones and handheld electronic devices, which
require chips that are smaller and consume less electricity than chips used in computers.

"The current upturn is being driven by an unquenching thirst for more bandwidth," Myers said in a
statement.

chipmakers get two and a half times more microprocessors from each wafer, Myers said.
