Piecemeal implementation of the last mile will put us well behind international competitiors. As I recall, Singapore is providing fiber optic (HFC)access to every household and most Northern European nations are not too far behind Singapore.

With the exception of Al Gore, there is little push inside the Beltway to bring last-mile access to each American home. Much of the problem lies with the content to be delivered. Too much smut and too meager offerings worth more than a short visit. Maybe, the second Internet channel being put together by some universiites and businesses could alleviate these weaknesses in the present Internet.

My guess is that content will drive last-mile implementation. When consumers can get better deals on the Net than at the malls, when we can better communicate with each other on the Net (e-mail is a great start), when educational programs really educate us and our children on the Net, and when forms of entertainment on the Net are must haves, there will be a public clamor to deliver high quality, last-mile access. Right now, it's reality for less than 1% of Americans, a dream for about 20% and the rest don't give a hoot.
