OTOH, QCOM's market is not the consumers, it could be argued, but the service providers.

So is INTC's. And consumers would never have identified the computer with INTEL nor demanded Intel but for the logo "Intel Inside" and the fact that most resellers took advantage of that logo and convinced their customers that Intel was a better way to go 'even if they had to pay more for it.'
