Merry - I am a long time Unix user, and have a Linux desktop that I use routinely. Linux is making great strides, but it is still something that takes a lot of technical skill to set up and use. At the current state of Linux desktop development, you will find a lot of things that you want to do that you just can't do. My sense from your post is that you are not a technoid. Unless you have one living in the house, this would probably be a bad choice.
