Actually, there aren't many ways to avoid the estate tax anymore.

The $25,000,000 guy can reduce the estate tax burden to, say, a 30% effective rate, instead of 50%, but his kids definitely will have to write a check to the IRS.

You have things like charitable trusts and private foundations, through which his family can retain control of the funds after his death (a la Bill Gates Foundation), but there's no way he can pass his wealth on to his family without getting bitten by the estate tax.
