It is true that socialists favored a progressive income tax, with the emphasis on progressive, for the purposes of income equalization, which, be it noted, has never been achieved. Since I had specifically favored a flat- tax, and asked what was wrong with an income tax per se, the issue of progressivity was pretty much off the table. In any case, even if we were discussing a progressive income tax, the fact that one plank was shared with Marx would not make the other "Marxist". One could, for example, support modest progressivity as a way of easing the burden on those who are less affluent, without aiming at income equalization...... |
