c.h.,

I'm sorry if I offend anyone's delicate sensibilities, but I'm sick of people blaming others
for their own folly.

The year? 1976

I had smoked for about ten years. I knew it was bad for me and decided I needed to quit.

I quit.

The news was out then. Smoking affected your lifespan and your health.

The problem that the tobacco industry faces today is that they knew of the additive qualities of nicotine and the health risks long before the government.

And they target marketed tobacco products to minors.

These are facts. There is documentation to prove it.

I am not a do-gooder, tree-hugger, or whale lover, nor do I wish to see the tobacco companies fined out of existence. I also do not agree with the levels of the fines.

But the fact is, they really should be penalized.

Do you remember a few years ago when the CEO's of all of the major tobacco companies testified before Congress and lied under oath concerning health risks and target marketing?

It's a wonder they are not all behind bars.

I believe one has to bear responsibility for one's own actions. I believe if one wants to quit smoking, drinking, drugs, whatever, one can do it if one really wants to. I don't believe in punishing a company for supplying a legal vice.

But, I do believe in punishing a company for lying and deceiving. The jury awarded far too much penalty. But IMHO, the guilty verdicts are just.

Have fun,
Phil
