News Release
Mr Stephen Swift reports
The company has entered into a collaborative research agreement with the
University of British Columbia (UBC) to develop the next generation of digital
image compression technologies for color image compression. During this two year
project, UBC and Image Power will develop, optimize and commercialize state of
the art color image compression technologies based on wavelets. Wavelet based
image compression algorithms can achieve color image compression at levels of up
to 200:1, versus the current achievable compression levels of 10:1 to 40:1, while still
preserving the visual quality of the original image.
The International Standards Organization (ISO) is currently drafting a new color
compression standard called JPEG-2000, which is slated to enhance the existing
JPEG standard widely used on the Internet today. The technology being developed
under this agreement will be submitted as a candidate compression technique to the
JPEG-2000 committee. Image Power has been an active participant in the ISO
standards process over the past two years, and intends to continue this participation.
Image Power plans to immediately license UBC's existing wavelet technology for
use in an image compression product planned for release in Q3 1997. The
technology will also find applicability in several of Image Power's other business
areas, including Internet and wireless image transmission.
The applications for the above technology are very broad. Wavelet based
technologies set new benchmarks for color compression levels. If approved as an
international standard such technologies will undoubtedly be the choice for digital
image applications. The representative markets for digital imaging include wireless
data, satellite communications, digital cameras, medical imaging and the transmission
of images over the Internet.
The ultimate objective is to build a generic compression technology that not only sets
a new standard in color image compression but also provides a high level of
flexibility. As an industry standard, this technology would be applicable to virtually all
segments of the image compression industry.
