Ireland considers more broadband wireless licences
By Tony Roddam, Reuters

Ireland's telecommunications industry regulator said on Thursday she was considering offering two more wireless broadband licences and another narrowband wireless licence.

Regulator Etain Doyle said she was looking for views from the telecommunications industry on the fixed wireless access licences. The regulator last week awarded 10-year wireless broadband licences to Esat Telecom Ltd and Formus Communications Ireland Ltd.

"The purpose of this consultation is to review the emerging demand for fixed wireless access services in Ireland, to determine the extent to which the recently licensed services will satisfy future demand and to ensure there is sufficient radio spectrum to meet FWA requirements for the foreseeable future," Doyle said in a statement.

Ireland's telecommunications industry is expanding rapidly as the country's six-year economic boom fuels an explosion in mobile phone and Internet use.

The wireless facility means the technology is cheaper than connecting customers with copper or fibre cable and can allow access to hitherto restricted areas - a key attraction in Ireland, given the country's underdeveloped infrastructure.

The broadband facility is aimed at medium to large users of telecoms services, allowing companies to transmit large volumes of information, including video, voice and data.

The narrowband facility is considered an alternative to the local loop - the final mile of cable connecting households to the main networks.
