Not so fast, ruffian. It definitely would be a very big problem "working around" the CDMA standard. Because these two standards, GSM and CDMA1 will never merge.

However, a GSM with two different modes is business as usual. There is a variety of two-frequency phones available, both in 900-1800 and 900-1900 MHz bands, as well as there are some three band phones such as Bosch World Phone 900/1800/1900 (guess its going to be called Siemens from now on).

With these phones a different frequency is invisible for the subscriber.

Furthermore, if the hapless tourist has only a single mode 900 MHz phone and has to travel to the US or some other weirdo-standard country he can rent a phone, insert his SIM chip to the phone and hey presto, he can call and if someone calls him to his old number his phone will ring alright. Note that he only needs to rent the phone, no need to make any arrangements with any operator.

This is the reason (GSM technology) why DoMoCo, Deutsche Telecom and everyone else are looking at VoiceStream real hard.
