Have you ever used a heart monitor when running? I read an article recently that suggested that the best thing one can do to improve fitness is to wear a heart monitor while engaging in aerobic activities - like running, cycling, even swimming. Went on to say that it was like having a personal running coach/trainer and that the thing most people discover after using one is that they have to slow down in order to achieve maximum benefit.

Anyway, I bought one and used it today. You wear the belt around your chest and the watch on your wrist. Enter in your training range (ie 70% to 85% of your maximum heart rate as the low and high) and start running. It will beep if you go above or below your training range.

Didn't get 3/4's of the way around the track before my beeper started - I had to slow down so much that I felt I was running in slow motion. However, I ran twice as far.
Amazing thing. The theory is that as I get fitter, I'll be able to run faster at the same heart rate.

There are a few different brands out in the market, but the one I bought is being used by one of our local hospitals in conjunction with their heart smart program. They consider it to be the most accurate. If you're interested, I'll give you the details.
