Re: "If you want to argue that Coppermine is as good of a processor as Athlon then fine. I won't even argue. But to suggest that the K7 core is not architecturally superior to the P6 core is just ridiculous"

EPI your post has too many points for me to address each one but the above statement is a nice condensed version so I will respond to that:

That is exactly what I am arguing. CuMine is as good as K7 and it does it with 1) smaller on-die cache 2) slower memory interface 3) fewer FPU execution units. In short the added K7 whistles and bells were completely negated by a good cache. Keep in mind that the AMD faithful claimed all along that K7 would finally shine once a real K7 optimizing compiler as available and that Intel was cheating by using one that optimized CuMine to the exclusion of K7. Well the K7 compiler is here and the FPU does not appear to be distancing itself from CuMine. In fact they look very very close. Do you consider finally catching up to CuMine to be the sign of a FPU that is a generation ahead? Finally drawing even with a processor that is supposed to be a generation behind? My point is simply this. Athlon and CuMine are so close that neither is entitled to claim superiority much less claim to be a generation ahead. If a tiny advantage on legacy code is enough to impress you then be my guest but I don't agree.
