I've talked to quite a few technical people about Oracle products, and what I've heard consistently is that Oracle software is quite competitive technically. For instance, one guy I know that had a lot of experience with ERP systems said that Oracle's software was better designed than SAP and PeopleSoft (this is his opinion, but he worked with them all and had no particular axe to grind), except that the user interface for Oracle was terrible. This is probably the biggest change in 11i -- they have switched from using the SQL*Forms interface (or whatever it's called) to generating HTML and using a browser. (I don't know for sure that they've really done that universally, but that's what the PR makes it sound like.) This guy was convinced that this simple change would be a big improvement for Oracle's ERP software.

In other words, I think that competitors like to pick on Oracle's technology because it's fairly hopeless to attack them on any other point. And my take is that while no one is the clear winner, Oracle is as good as or better than all of the other players. (I think that MSFT is the clear loser in this area, and in fact are only credible because they can afford to keep trying indefinitely.)
