Howdy, C. Horn

Getting a life...

I was only little. I was allowed to cry. "Why did you drown the little kittens? They wanted to live". I felt the horrible sickness that always comes when life is shut off. It was hard to breathe past my sobs.

"They're only animals", my brother said. "We have way too many cats. We don't need a bunch of hungry diseased cats around--especially not with little kids playing about".

Later that day I lay in the grass on my back, and I watched the big white clouds floating peacefully overhead. I thought about drowning. It scared me. I closed my eyes. "Dear God", I whispered, reverently. "Why did you drown all the peoples ceptin one family? You told Moses that killin was wrong. Why did you murder all those people, even the terrified little children"?

I opened my eyes and saw that some Serious clouds had raced in high above the cotton ball clouds. They gave a quick swirl and a voice spoke in my head: "Read your Bible. I was angry".

It was true, I thought to myself. I was getting way too big to cry.
