My problem is not in the acceptance of gays, it is in promoting the lifestyle as a healthy alternative.

The problem is simply a gap in perception. Gay people of my generation, who suffered appalling abuse in high school, think it's vitally important to reach out to gay youth and prevent them from suffering the same sort of abuse. Some others see this process as "recruitment". This perception gap can only be closed by discussions which acknowledge the legitimate concerns on both sides. Hysteria does more harm than good.
