Japan, Europe Uphold Qualcomm Patents

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news), maker of technology for digital wireless communications, on Monday said Japanese and European patent offices upheld the validity of three of its patents covering key features of its Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology.

The Japanese Patent Office confirmed Qualcomm's first CDMA patent, originally filed in the United States in 1986 and granted in Japan in March 1998. In its decision the Japanese Patent Office rejected claims by six companies including Nokia Ab (NOK1V.HE), Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson (LMEb.ST) and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (9432.T).

In two separate decisions in Europe, the European Patent Office upheld a patent protecting technology that increases capacity in communications systems, especially indoor CDMA systems. A second patent covers a feature that gives users the ability to monitor audibly the progress of a fax or modem connection over a digital channel.

Separately, the company said Toshiba Corp. (6502.T) expanded its licensing agreement to develop, manufacture and sell subscriber units for all modes of the third-generation CDMA standard. Toshiba has agreed to pay Qualcomm a multi-million dollar license fee and ongoing royalties as Toshiba begins selling third-generation CDMA equipment.

Shares of Qualcomm closed Friday at 63-1/16. The company's 52-week high was 200, its low was 33-15/16.
