Manugistics Announces Intelligent Purchasing Solution

Staples Using Solution to Improve Purchase Order Visibility

ORLANDO, Fla., July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Manugistics Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: MANU), a leading global provider of intelligent supply chain solutions for enterprises and evolving eBusiness trading networks, today announced at the company's award-winning enVISION2000 conference the Manugistics Intelligent Purchasing Solution. Staples Inc. (Nasdaq: SPLS), the pioneer of the office supply superstore industry, is the solution's most recent customer, using it to help improve the visibility of purchase order status with the company's suppliers and carriers.

"Manugistics Intelligent Purchasing Solution addresses the core business challenges of purchasers by enabling improved forecasting, planning and supplier relationships," said Rich Bergmann, executive vice president of global sales and services at Manugistics. "In conjunction with key Manugistics NetWORKS(TM) products, the solution can help leading companies such as Staples streamline and improve their supply chain visibility from procurement to transport to product destination."

The configurable Intelligent Purchasing Solution offers strategic supplier selection, purchasing collaboration and purchase order execution capabilities; and by next year is expected to include intelligent order building capabilities. When paired with Manugistics' exception-based management, track- and-trace and transportation management offerings, the Intelligent Purchasing Solution can help companies overhaul fragmented purchase order processes.

An existing Manugistics customer, Staples has already experienced reduced transportation costs using Manugistics NetWORKS Transport(TM) to manage inbound freight shipments. The new Solution will help make Staples' inbound logistics processes even more intelligent, which will likely lead to improved product visibility and flow, shortened transportation cycle lead times, and improved on-time delivery.

"Staples' return to us for additional solutions demonstrates Manugistics' commitment to the long-term success of its clients," added Bergmann.

"To improve the flow of supply chain information within our purchasing network, we evaluated several leading solution providers over the past year," said David Barclay, vice president of merchandising and supply chain systems at Staples. "In the end, it came down to Manugistics' highly successful track record with Staples making them the right choice for us."

The Intelligent Purchasing Solution is expected to complement a larger e- business initiative by Staples which includes the recently launched StaplesPartners.com, a portal aimed at helping Staples' manufacturers and suppliers respond better to customer needs.
