Mike, re BMCS and CA, read my post that you responded to. The guy I talked about that posted SI about IBM restructuring software costs because (in his opinion) those 3rd party SW companies were charging much too much, might have posted it on the IBM thread. It's a sparsely posted thread. Check it out. If what he said is true, they may be out in the cold because of IBM's new pricing policy.

According to Murphy and others the CA/BMC shortfalls had as much to do with economic factors as IBM new mainframe release. Companies having just come thru Y2K expenses and beginning to feel the effects of higher interest rates and other pressures on bottom line + confusion over the many choices in software currently available may have collectively decided that now was the time to slow down a bit on purchases.

Then why are Compaq, Dell and Intel so bullish about 2H sales, particular in the X86 server area. I will concede that a lot of that might be because of strength of Unix and Linux based systems, in which Microsoft does not share. Also Sun Micro seems to continue very bullish for their Solaris based stuff. Pretty much concluded that IA64 won't take off in quantities until McKinley based systems show up, probably not until 2002. That helps Sun a lot.

I think there is a pretty large gap opening between the haves and have-nots in the enterprise IT server area. X86 and Sun the haves, all the rest the have-nots. JMO and WDIK.
