Asia's Largest Wireless Operators Prepare to Launch First Commercial 3G cdma2000 Services
Efforts Continue to Move Forward with CDMA Globally
COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 2000--The CDMA Development Group (CDG) today announced that third generation wireless services based on the ITU standard, cdma2000, are moving forward rapidly throughout Asia.
In Korea, two of the country's largest wireless operators, SK Telecom and KT Freetel, have announced that they are preparing to launch the world's first commercial 3G services using cdma2000, as early as this year. Japanese operators will follow shortly there after.
``As expected, subscribers in Korea and Japan will soon benefit from true 3G services based on cdma2000 including high-speed mobile Internet access as well as full multimedia capabilities,'' said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. ``Korea will be among the first to benefit from the commercial rollout of true advanced wireless services using cdma2000. We applaud their leadership in this regard. Recent stories that Korea was not implementing cdma2000 were wrong and ignored recent announcements from the carriers themselves.''
With cdma2000 serving as the backbone technology for 3G, global CDMA operators and manufacturers will be first to market with advanced 3G services -- in some cases years before so called ``wider bandwidth'' systems. cdma2000 operators will have leadtime advantages as well as economies of scale in the highly competitive 3G marketplace.
LaForge also noted that, ``Along with Korea and Japan, we fully expect that cdmaOne and cdma2000 will be implemented in China. We anticipate that a number of manufacturers from all over the world, including the Koreans, will play a major role in this implementation.''
Currently, several other global operators have committed to conducting cdma2000 trials or committed to commercial deployment including Bell Mobility, Clearnet, LG Telecom, Sprint PCS, Telstra, Telus and Verizon Wireless. In addition, Intel, Lucent Technologies, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel Networks, QUALCOMM, Samsung and LGIC have also announced support for cdma2000.
The CDMA Development Group is a non-profit trade association formed to foster the worldwide development, implementation and use of CDMA.
