<<Pretty good functional diagram of a (SIM enabled) Multimedia and Bluetooth capable CDMA handset on the second page of this PDF brochure for the Qualcomm MSM3300 chipset>>

Eric - many thanks for the link. Now there my friend is the blueprint of an open proprietary architecture glued together with software.

Every box on that diagram has some software (level 1) in it and every place you see light blue space or arrows between the boxes has some more software (level 2) in it. It's very enlightening to see how far QCOM has progressed in trying to extend their control of the architecture beyond "just" the CDMA processor. It's also a little awe inspiring to realize this diagram is for a chip a generation or so behind the latest, greatest and they seem to be the only ones who can make it so far.

Does anyone here know anything about ARM and the role their core is playing in non-CDMA cell phone design?
