If you've read the discussion over the past 10 or 12 posts, you know that I think that the current exemption is way too low, inflation over the past 20 or 25 years has rendered it onerous. However, to acknowledge that is not the same as saying that the tax itself is without merit. I believe it has both moral and political merits. Moral partly for the reason you gave, and partly because people shouldn't be encouraged to be like "Midas", they should be discouraged from it (yes, I know, that sounds like government as "Big Brother", but we all agree that sometimes government should assume that role, for example in the "Just Say No" campaign of R and N Reagan). Political for more complicated reasons, but basically summarized in the saying "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely".

In any case, when I starting replying to these posts, I didn't mean for it to go quite as far or as long as it has. I'm outta here.
