WASHINGTON, Jul 17, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Loral Space & Communications today received the Defense Department's highest award for
safeguarding national security information.

The James S. Cogswell Award for Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement was presented to Loral by the Defense Security Service. Only 50
organizations, one half of one percent of the 11,600 facilities cleared for classified work, received the award.

Bernard L. Schwartz, Chairman and CEO of Loral, said: "On behalf of the thousands of current and former employees of Loral, I accept this prestigious award
in recognition of their superlative record of safeguarding national security information. It is also a tribute to Loral's fifty-year history of outstanding service to the
U.S. government and the American people. We hope this award will serve as a reminder of the high standards of security that Loral has always vigorously
sought to maintain.

General Charles J. Cunningham Jr., Director of the Defense Security Service, said in a letter to Mr. Schwartz that the Cogswell Award recognized Loral's
"extraordinary performance over a sustained period of time."

"Through your leadership, those of your company's other executives, the efforts of your security team members and your employees," General Cunningham
said, "your company's superior execution of security responsibilities has contributed significantly to our country's national security needs."

The reward was received on behalf of Loral by Colonel Nick Alexandrow (U.S. Air Force Retired), Corporate Director of Export Matters, and Master
Sergeant Alvin A. Ulsh (U.S. Air Force Retired), Corporate Director of Security.
