An interesting story on DeCSS, conversion to DivX and the movie industry suit against 3 individuals for "for contributory copyright infringement."

news.excite.com

All in all, the process took Shamos' assistant about 20 hours to decrypt the movie "Sleepless in Seattle" and compress it into the DivX format. Shamos claimed that with the expertise they have gained, they could cut that time to 10 hours.

Shamos' assistant then traded the movie on the Internet for a copy of the "Matrix" in the DivX format. Using the university network, which averaged 250kbps during the download and another 250kbps for the simultaneous upload, the trade took about 6 hours.

More on DeCSS (from one of the defendants in the lawsuit)

The above link is for educational purposes only.

On December 27th, 1999 DVD CCA sued over 500 people in at least 11 nations for making DeCSS available for download, or for linking to a site that does so,claiming "misappropriation of trade secrets".

Could I be liable for the above link? What about Excite who posted the news story which made me search for DeCSS. Or Jeeves who found it for me, and posted the link to Lemuria?

Frank, how do you think my cable will hold up when people start trading billions/trillions of bits of DVD data on @HOME's network?

Regards
Jay
