Yes, a search for index.dat shows it in windows\tempor~. However when I look for it there it isn't there. As you say an illusion.

I noticed on the search that I have an index.dat in windows\cookies also. Didn't even know this existed. Where do sites go to look for cookies the temporary internet folder or the cookies folder? When you use IE to clean the temp folder it will not delete the cookies. It can be done in DOS but some of them are useful and I don't want to lose them. If my sites eg SI looks in windows\cookies for my settings then I can delete the temp folder in one step with DOS.

PS did not reformat for this but was interested to see what happened when I did.
