It is a bit difficult to understand why God would want to favor Moses with the sight of his hind parts. Just being generous, I guess. Previous to that in 33:11 they did speak face to face: "And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend". However, immediately after that God informed Moses that no man could see his face and live. The mooning was perhaps a way of creating a valid exception to the law. I don't fully understand it myself. Perhaps someone can explain it for both of us...
