I thought it was the Germans with unrestricted submarine warfare and the Zimmerman telegram who got us into WWI. I thought it was the Japanese who got us into WWII. In both cases the people were wildly enthusiastic about our entering those wars. Who got us into the Spanish American War? The Civil War? How is it that hundreds of thousands of ignorant, non-slave owning Southerners rushed off to war. Any one who tries to fight a war in this country or any other democracy that the people are not enthusiastic for will lose out politically. Today with good communications it is difficult to whip the people into war-like frenzy unless the war mongers really have a wonderful cause that will be very easy to win. How enthusiastic are the people of China or Taiwan for a war? How enthusiastic are we to whip China's butt unless it is very, very cheap?
