GZ,

Regarding the merger, yes it would have made quite an impact. However GBLX has always believed in the integration of the data center with the backbone. The sale of Global Center didn't make sense to me, as it would leave Global Crossing without an adequate hosting capability. We are consistently hearing how hosting drives bandwidth consumption in spades, so why deprive Global Crossing of future revenues for short-term gain? For EXDS, the deal would have been a real coup, as their market position would have been greatly enhanced. That's not to say that EXDS can't go out an buy someone else, as it is rumored to be doing with DIGX.

What would have been more interesting would have been if the two companies could have worked out a merger, backbone and all. Competition in the hosting market is heating up (albeit slowly), and the ability to save on transport may be significant over time. This could be true particularly in the international market, where transport capacity is much more limited than it is here in the US. Just my two cents...
