funny thing, but some environmentalists, who understand folks aren't going to give up electricity, are starting to think of nuclear as the lesser of two evils -- i.e. coal that is burned goes into the atmosphere -- no matter how much you "clean" it -- at least spent nuclear fuel and old nuclear units can be localized to some extent

but if you really look at the total fuel cost associated with nukes -- coal is more attractive -- I think what we need is more research into either 1) processing coal or 2) burning it more cleanly. the easiest approach is already being taken -- mine the coal with the lowest sulfur content and transport it everywhere within the states -- this is "economic" now because of all the environmental regs

conservation -- "appropriate use", etc. is died with the advent of the bubble. These things come in cycles -- it'll be in vogue to save and conserve again.
