Dunkie the modems are limited to 33.6 on the upstream side, thus 2 modems back to back could not transmit any faster then this. Also, the 8 bit codex at the Central Office (the 8 bit codex analog to digital converter) is not capable of converting modem signals that are faster then 33.6K. Scrapps posted a URL sometime ago which has a great article about 56K.
