Dear Scot:

Re: Great quote from "Intel, AMD profits expected to grow"?

"AMD's earnings, by contrast, should be fairly straightforward. The main question surrounding the company's conference call lies in its projections for the future. The company has said it wants to achieve 30 percent market share by the end of the year. To get there, AMD has said it will have to get into the market for computers used in business environments."

The second sentence says that AMD wants to achieve 30 percent market share by the end of this year (2000). Previously they said by the end of next year (2001). If this is now true and not simply a typo (missing the word next), AMD is doing far better than anyone thought. That would mean that AMD would be shipping CPUs at a rate of 5 to 6 million a month or 15 to 18 million a quarter. The expected rate for Q2 is somewhere between 6.5 to 7 million. The expected rate for Q4 was somewhere between 8 and 10 million. The new rate is between 50 and 120% greater than we were told to expect for Q1-2001, unless Intel is expected to have a manufacturing or marketing disaster.

However, I assume that the analyst or the data entry person simply missed the word "next".

Pete
