I do not think it is a coincidence that the English speaking counties are leading the charge against gold. Canada has sold almost all of its gold, Australia, a large proportion, and Britain is in the process of selling a large percentage.

I suspect that the US too would be selling gold if the current Administration could have its way. Only the knowledge that Congress would block such sales keeps them from proposing it IMHO.

Let us also remember that the US proposed that the IMF sell its gold only to be blocked by European and Congressional opposition.
