RESEARCH ALERT-Qualcomm earns growth seen lackluster

NEW YORK, July 18 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch analyst Michael Ching on Tuesday forecast "relatively lackluster" growth in fiscal 2001 revenues for mobile phone technology company Qualcomm Inc. <QCOM.O>.

-- kept ratings of near-term neutral, long-term buy.

-- "For the June quarter, we are currently forecasting 16 percent pro forma revenue growth to $750 million, and 26 percent pro forma EPS (earnings-per-share) growth" to 27 cents a share.

-- blames setbacks in China and Korea for lessened near-term earnings outlook.

-- "With possible revisions, we are looking at relatively lackluster EPS growth of 22 percent in fiscal 2001."

-- Credit Suisse First Boston analyst Marc Cabi said slowdown in South Korea "should hold back (Qualcomm's) upside from a recovery in chipset sales off the sluggish March quarter."

-- He added, "We believe a slowdown in Korea will also limit the company's upside in (the second half of 2000) as the company generates over 20 percent of its revenue from chipset sales and licensing from Korean handset sales."

-- " We ... see potential for downward revisions following the quarter."

-- Qualcomm reports fiscal third-quarter earnings after markets close on Wednesday.

-- Qualcomm shares off 4 at 65-13/16.
